| Idea: Get rid of your table salt and use a good quality UNREFINED salt.
Why: In its natural state, salt contains a wealth of trace minerals in addition to sodium chloride. Salt (along with potassium) is one of the major electrolytes necessary to every cellular function. Unfortunately most salt today is stripped of all trace minerals and is highly refined. When the quality of salt in our diet is compromised we miss out on the beneficial attributes… as well, we add a toxic substance to our diet.
All salt is mainly sodium chloride. With unrefined salt the balance is natural elements and trace minerals. With table salt the balance are chemicals. Large commercial producers of salt, add sodium ferro cyanide and green ferric ammonium citrate, as anti caking agents. Iodized salt not only contains these unnatural and toxic chemicals, but also contain potassium iodine, dextrose (sugar) to help stabilize the iodine, and sodium carbonate as a color preservative.
Even if a salt is labeled ‘sea salt’ it may be (and usually is) highly refined. Refined sea salt is not going to offer the same nutritional value as an unrefined product. Sea salt that includes magnesium carbonate as an ingredient, is bleached white in color, and is not at least somewhat moist, is usually refined and best avoided.
Unrefined sea salt will have a pink or grayish color to it and will also be moist. Fine sea salt is best stored in a tightly sealed glass jar. A few grains of brown rice in the shaker help to absorb moisture, keeping the salt flowing.
