On November 9, the American Dental Association (ADA) finally admitted that
fluoride levels in common tap water could be dangerous for infants. The ADA recommended that fluoridated
water should not be mixed into concentrated formula or foods intended for
babies. The ADA's announcement comes on the heels of a National
Research Council report that revealed fluoridation's adverse effects to the
thyroid gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others. The
Centers for Disease Control has added to the debate with a new report showing
that fluoride absorbs into enamel topically, however, adverse effects occur
upon ingestion.
Early this month, the American Dental Association, put out a
press release advising that, when mixing baby formula, tap water in fluoridated
areas should not be used and other fluoridated water should not be used.
The anti-fluoridation movement have known this for years, however this is the
first time that the AmDA has admitted this very important fact. (Baby formula
mixed with tap water contains at least 100 times more fluoride than mother’s
milk).
Dental fluorosis
is not the only risk from early-life exposure to fluoride. A recent review in The Lancet describes
fluoride as "an emerging neurotoxic substance" that may damage the
developing brain. The National
Research Council has identified fluoride as an "endocrine
disrupter" that may impair thyroid function, while recent research
from Harvard University
has found a possible connection between fluoride and bone cancer.
