Make Your Own Fast Food

 

Fast food does not have to be junk food! With a bit of planning you can create a system that will allow you to have “grab and go” foods that will be both nourishing and convenient.

Here’s the plan:

1. Pick a day to do some food prep. Even better, if you are too busy, hire someone to do it for you (we can help if you don’t have another solution).

2. Purchase some single serving food storage containers.  Cardboard soup containers available at Gordon Foods, Sam's Club or Costco work great.

3. Select 5 -7 recipes for foods that you enjoy that are also healthy and that fit the circumstance in which you will be eating your “fast food” (i.e. breakfast, lunch, snacks, etc.). Choose foods that are stable and that can be prepared in advance without compromising quality. Some of our favorites are:

  • Chicken, egg or tuna salad (with sprouted grain or lettuce wrap if you like)
  • Hard boiled or deviled eggs
  • Steamed shrimp with old bay (or any way you like them!)
  • Raw cheese with fruit (apples or pears preferably but if you don’t have an insulin resistance issue other fruits can work as well)
  • Sliced veggies with hummus, salsa or yogurt dip
  • Organic, unprocessed, nitrate free lunch meats, beef sticks or salami (get these from your local farmers!)
  • Cold brown rice or other grain salad
  • White bean salad
  • Whey advanced protein powder
  • Tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil with olive oil
  • Jiccama sticks
  • If you have time and ability to warm up your food, soups and chilis are also great
4. Prepare your foods and transfer to the single serving containers then label each.  Have everything you need ready to go so that you can open your refrigerator, grab the number of items you need (putting them in a cooler if you will be packing for the entire day) and be on your way.

Remember… single servings, stable foods, everything ready to go in advance.
